History
Venice is a historic coastal city in southern Sarasota County known for its Mediterranean inspired design and strong community identity. The area was originally inhabited by Indigenous peoples and later explored by Spanish settlers. Modern development began in the 1920s when city planners envisioned Venice as a master planned resort community modeled after Italian Renaissance architecture. Venice was officially incorporated as a city in 1926, during Florida’s land boom era.
The city’s name reflects its original architectural vision, with canals, arched buildings, and pink and tan facades shaping early neighborhoods. One of Venice’s most distinctive claims to fame is its reputation as the Shark Tooth Capital of the World, due to the abundance of fossilized shark teeth found along its beaches. Over the decades, Venice balanced growth with preservation, maintaining historic districts and coastal access. According to the City of Venice, long term planning emphasizes historic protection, flood resilience, and a high quality of life for residents.
