History
South Venice is a residential community located just south of the city of Venice in Sarasota County, FL. Development of the area accelerated in the mid 20th century as affordable housing and suburban neighborhoods expanded beyond Venice’s original city limits. Unlike Venice, South Venice remained unincorporated, allowing it to grow with a more flexible, neighborhood focused layout.
The community was designed primarily for year round residents rather than resort style tourism, which shaped its character as a practical and livable area. One unique feature of South Venice is its private ferry and beach access system, established to give residents direct access to the Gulf of Mexico without large scale commercial development. According to Sarasota County, South Venice continues to be governed at the county level, with planning priorities centered on infrastructure, flood management, and residential stability.
