Osprey, FL
History
Osprey is a small coastal community in southern Sarasota County with a history rooted in fishing, farming, and quiet bayfront living. The area was settled in the late 1800s by pioneers drawn to the rich natural resources along Little Sarasota Bay. Osprey developed as an unincorporated community rather than a formal city, which helped preserve its rural and residential character over time. The name Osprey is believed to reference the fish hawk birds commonly seen along the shoreline and wetlands.
A major historical landmark in the area is Historic Spanish Point, now part of a major botanical and archaeological site that highlights early Native American habitation and pioneer life. As Sarasota County grew, Osprey remained intentionally low density, with growth shaped by environmental conservation and zoning controls. According to Sarasota County, land use planning in Osprey continues to prioritize coastal protection, historic preservation, and neighborhood stability.
