History
Nokomis is one of the oldest communities in Sarasota County, with a history that predates many surrounding cities in FL. The area was settled in the mid 1800s by pioneers attracted to its access to the Gulf of Mexico, inland waterways, and fertile land. Nokomis is often recognized as the first European settlement in the county. The name Nokomis comes from Native American lore and is associated with Longfellow’s Song of Hiawatha, reflecting the literary influences popular at the time of settlement.
A major milestone in Nokomis’s development was the construction of early bridges connecting the mainland to Casey Key, which improved transportation and supported fishing, trade, and tourism. Unlike nearby incorporated cities, Nokomis remained an unincorporated community, allowing it to retain a quieter, residential character. According to Sarasota County, Nokomis continues to be governed at the county level with planning efforts focused on coastal protection, flood management, and sustainable community growth.
