History
Laurel is a small unincorporated community in southern Sarasota County with roots tied to early agriculture and rail travel in FL. Settlement began in the late 1800s as pioneers were drawn to the area’s fertile land and access to transportation corridors connecting Sarasota and Venice. Laurel developed primarily as a rural service area supporting farming and citrus operations rather than a dense urban center. The community’s name is believed to reference native laurel plants common in the region during its early years.
A key milestone in Laurel’s growth was the arrival of the railroad, which helped move agricultural goods and supported modest residential development. Unlike nearby cities, Laurel never incorporated, allowing it to maintain a quieter, small community identity. According to Sarasota County, Laurel continues to be governed at the county level, with planning efforts focused on infrastructure, flood management, and preserving residential character.
